Networking For Dummies

Networking for Dummies upholds the series’ proletarian tradition by entertainingly explaining local area networks (LAN) to the rest of us. Written with three different–but equally “clueless in technical matters;quot;–audiences in mind, Lowe’s book appeals to novice network users, novice network builder/administrators, and the managers who must finance the activities of the other two groups.

A large part of this book is devoted to user issues such as “Accessing a network drive from WordPerfect” and “What is a print job?” Other chapters explain the differences among the various network architectures and network operating systems. In addition, the book pays a lot of attention to troubleshooting, particularly for common problems.

For these reasons, Networking for Dummies makes a fine resource for people who are new to a networked environment. If you are a network administrator, you might want to get a copy (or three) of this book for the corporate library and refer it to all askers of brain-dead questions.

The book’s primary shortcoming is its ignorance of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Novell IntranetWare. (Coverage of NT stops at version 3.51 and coverage of NetWare stops at version 4.1.) Still, lots of organizations still run these network operating systems, and if yours is one of them, this book may fit your needs admirably.

Book Description:

Company just hooked you up to a network and you’re wondering what the heck you’re supposed to do with it? Tired of burning spreadsheets onto CDs just so you can share them with coworkers, and you’re wondering what it’ll take to set up a network in your organization? Been tasked with setting up a network and you don’t have a clue about where to begin? Don’t fret, you’ll find all the answers you’re looking for in Networking for Dummies.

Written for even the most network-shy novice, it begins with the most basic of basics—“A network is nothing more than two or more computers connected by a cable (or wireless adapter) so that they can share information”—and progresses through all the essentials, from cables, routers and hubs to building a wireless network. In clear, simple language, peppered with enough wry quips and jabs at the cult of IT to make it fun, Doug Lowe walks you through:
What a network is and how to use it
How to build a wired or wireless network
How to secure and optimize a network
How to troubleshoot a network
Safely connecting a network to the Internet
Networking with all major operating systems

This new edition of the bestselling guide features extensive updates on the latest networking tools and trends—including new Windows Vista and Server 2003 R2—the latest broadband options, new storage and back-ups, and an all new-chapter on VoIP and Internet telephony.

Upgrading & Fixing PCs For Dummies

Loaded with solid advice in the fun style typical of this series, Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies is an excellent introduction to what makes your computer go. If you’re sure you can put your new modem or video card in by yourself (and you can), this book will provide you with the help you need.

Rathbone starts with an introduction to all the mysterious connections on the back of your computer’s case, teaching you how to distinguish a game port from a serial port and an audio jack from a network connection. He then moves inside the case, using drawings and diagrams to illustrate processors, peripheral cards, memory modules, and other internal components. Troubleshooting occupies much of this book, and the author explains the basic “identify and isolate” strategy very well. He also points out what to look and listen for, describing, for example, the meaning of the beeps you hear when you turn your computer on.

Some of Rathbone’s organizational decisions seem weird. He covers the procedure for replacing an internal modem in a chapter about all kinds of internal expansion cards, rather than in the modem chapter. But the information is there and it is well presented, so Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies makes an excellent resource for hardware novices. –David Wall

Dating For Dummies

If you think dating is a simple process–meet someone, ask him or her for a date or get asked out yourself, try not to come off as a drooling moron, then arrange to get together for a second date or cut your losses and work to meet someone else–well, lucky you. For many people, it’s far more complicated than that, and Dr. Joy Browne addresses those complexities in Dating for Dummies. Exactly how do you meet a potential date? How do you present yourself in the most favorable light? How do you negotiate that first date? (One interesting story Browne tells is of a couple who negotiated a weekend together, deciding whether or not they’d have sex, and under what conditions they’d consider marriage and children–all before their first date.) And how do you proceed from there? The process still comes down to chemistry, but Browne shows how many ways there are to make sure you get your best possible chance with Mr./Ms. Right.

Book Description:

If you’re looking for a fun Saturday night date or a happily-ever-after mate, this is the guide for you. Whether you’re young and haven’t dated much or older and have been out of circulation so long you’ve forgotten how to flirt, dating can be intimidating. Author Dr. Joy Browne, America’s favorite psychologist, demystifies the whole dating process, from getting a date, plotting the place, and having a great time (or dealing with dud dates) to moving beyond a first date, playing it safe, and how sex can impact a budding relationship.

In this new edition, Dr. Joy offers updated guidance on how to find a date, covering “speed dating,” Internet dating services, and singles nights at grocery stores and other unexpected places. She delivers fresh pointers on a whole host of topics, including:
Building your confidence and polishing your social self
Determining if you’re really ready to date
How to meet and approach Mr. or Ms. Intriguing
Where to go, what to do, what to wear, and what to avoid on the first date
Taboo subjects, such as your ex, sex, politics, and religion
Cell phone and e-mail etiquette
Moving from dating to a successful relationship and the four stages of attachment
Breaking up (just in case Mr. or Ms. Right wasn’t) and avoiding pity parties and pitfalls
The dos and don’ts of Internet dating

Dr. Joy Browne’s nationally syndicated daily radio show is the longest running program of its kind. Dr. Joy has won numerous awards for her work including the American Psychological Associations President’s Award and the Talkers Magazine award for Best Female Talk Show Host (two years in a row). She was #10 on the list of the 25 Greatest Radio Talk Show Hosts of All Time, and has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Talk Show Hosts nine times. Dr. Joy can frequently be seen on television as a guest on shows such as CBS’ The Early Show, Oprah Winfrey and Larry King Live. Dr. Joy has authored: It’s A Jungle Out There Jane, Dating for Dummies, The Nine Fantasies That Will Ruin Your Life, and Getting Unstuck.

Dating For Dummies, 2nd Edition includes advice for special dating situations such as long-distance relationships, office romances, single parents, senior citizens, and more. It gives you worksheets to help you objectively analyze your date expectations and evaluate a relationship. Packed with real-world wisdom, confidence boosters, and a dash of humor, this is the guide to help you get out of exile, get into dating, and perhaps even get into a meaningful relationship.
